'Perfect Days' an engrossing, contemplative look at a Tokyo public toilet cleaner in Tokyo's upscale Shibuya ward. When not scrubbing bathrooms clean: Hirayama dedicates his free time to his passion for music, which he listens to in his van to and from work, and to his books, which he reads every night before going to sleep. He reads stories by William Faulkner and Patricia Highsmith, and the essays of Aya Kōda. His dreams are shown in flickery impressionistic sequences at the end of every day.
For the 2024 OSCARs, the film was submitted by Japan as its Best International Feature Film of the year.
