Accessibility

At the Colonial, we are doing our best to create a setting that is welcoming and accessible to people of all disabilities and abilities. There are some significant limitations provided by our building that we are working towards solving in the future. In the meantime, we are doing everything within our power to expand the accessibility of our screenings and events.

Open Captions on Sundays

Films on Sundays are presented with Open Captions by default, unless otherwise stated on the showtime’s screening on our website.

What to Expect at the Theatre?

When entering the Colonial on High Street, you will find one curb cut leading to the sidewalk, and one ramp leading to the theatre’s doors. The doors do not have a push button, but our staff can assist people entering the building by holding the doors open for them as needed.

Our box office and concession stand are on the main floor of the theatre, just beyond the primary entrance on High Street. Typically, people purchase their tickets from the concession stand, but on busy nights, we also open the box office booth where people purchase their tickets before getting into the concessions line.

City and Star Theatres are both on the main level of the building, and can be easily accessed by folks using mobility aids. Both of these theatres have seating available for folks who use wheelchairs, and companion seats for anyone who may be attending the film with you.

Please note that our bathrooms and the Dreamland theatre are both in our basement level floor, and are accessed by two staircases – one that is straight, and one that has a turn a third of the way down the stairs.

There are two other staircases that folks must use to enter the Dreamland Theatre from inside the building. Dreamland can also be entered by a door on the side of the building with staff assistance. Please note that at this time there are still two stairs to enter through this door (this will be remedied in 2026), but it is a shorter distance to the theatre. If you plan to enter the building this way, please contact the theatre and either purchase your tickets online ahead of time, or by coming through the High Street Entrance and purchasing your tickets, then exiting the building to re-enter through the side door.

Relaxed Screenings

Coming in 2026!
Relaxed Screenings are those where the normal social norms of a theatre are suspended to create a space that is more welcoming for folks who may have different sensory sensitivities. At relaxed screenings, the film is presented at a lower volume, and more lights remain turned on in the theatre while the film is playing.

Attendees at Relaxed Screenings are not expected to remain quiet during the screening, or to remain in their seat through the duration of the movie. They are welcome to stim, work on a craft, or do other things that may help with their enjoyment of the film.
